QUESTION: What to do in case of fainting?

Answer

A sudden loss of consciousness by a person requires competent and quick actions from others to restore normal blood supply to the brain. The first step is to gently lay the victim on their back on a flat and hard surface. Make sure the person is lying safely and, if necessary, turn their head to the side to eliminate the risk of the tongue falling back or choking on saliva.

The second step will be to ensure the flow of blood to the vital organs of the head. Gently raise the victim's legs about thirty centimeters above the level of the torso by placing a bag, folded clothing, or improvised items under them, which will help blood return to the brain faster.

The third step should be to facilitate the person's breathing. Unbutton all tight buttons, loosen the belt, remove the tie or tight collar, which can compress the chest and prevent a free breath.

The fourth step consists of improving room ventilation and oxygen access. Ensure the flow of fresh air by opening a window or door, and ask onlookers to step back so as not to create a crowd around the victim.

The fifth step is to assess the person's condition after the measures taken. If within one to two minutes they do not regain consciousness, do not respond to voice and external stimuli, or if breathing becomes intermittent and unnatural, immediately call an ambulance team.
