How to get rid of laminate squeaking?

Laminate squeaking is a common problem that can be very annoying and ruin the comfort of your home. The main causes of this unpleasant sound are usually an uneven floor base, the absence of technological gaps near the walls, or small construction debris that got under the panels during installation. To eliminate the squeak, you first need to try to determine the exact location and cause of the sound.

A temporary but quick solution to eliminate squeaks in the joints is the use of special dry lubricants. You can carefully pour talcum powder, graphite powder, or melted paraffin into the gaps between the boards. These materials reduce friction between the laminate locks, and the sound disappears for a while.

If a specific board in the center of the room is squeaking, a void or unevenness may have formed under it. In this case, you will have to partially disassemble the flooring from the nearest wall to the problem area in order to lay a special lining or eliminate the screed defect.

Often, squeaking occurs because the laminate is laid close to the walls and has no room for thermal expansion. You need to remove the baseboards and check the gaps around the perimeter of the room, which should be at least eight to ten millimeters. If the laminate hits the wall, trim the edge with a jigsaw to free the coating.

In the most neglected cases, when the entire floor area squeaks due to gross errors in the installation of the rough screed, simple methods will not help. The only effective solution will be a complete re-laying of the laminate with prior leveling of the base with a self-leveling mixture.
