Tiles and joints: how to prepare the base and layout before installation?
High-quality base preparation and precise layout before tile installation determine the appearance and durability of the entire finish coating. In practice, for tile work, it is recommended to create a detailed checklist that includes a list of what needs to be bought, what parameters to measure, and which related trades to coordinate hidden utilities with to prevent rework and budget overruns.
The first stage of preparation consists of leveling the walls or floor using cement plasters and self-leveling compounds, since level differences of more than 2-3 millimeters are unacceptable. The base must be solid, dry, and thoroughly primed in two layers to improve the adhesion of the tile adhesive to the surface.
The second important step is to perform the correct geometric layout of the room using a laser level and a tape measure.
Before starting the main work, lay out the tiles "dry" without glue on the floor or wall to evaluate the pattern and avoid narrow ugly cuts near doors or corners. Careful adherence to this algorithm ensures that the finished cladding will look harmonious and hold firmly to the base.
