Are gym gloves necessary?

Answer

The use of sports gloves in the gym sparks a lot of debate among athletes and trainers. On the one hand, gloves are not a mandatory piece of equipment, and many experienced athletes prefer to go without them. Their main practical benefit is protecting the skin of the hands from rough calluses and abrasions when working with heavy dumbbells and barbells.

On the other hand, gloves can significantly impair grip reliability. An additional layer of fabric between your palm and the metal knurling increases the diameter of the handle, which can cause the barbell to slip out of your hands during heavy sets.

As an effective alternative to gloves, professionals use sports chalk or liquid chalk. They dry out the palms, provide an excellent grip on the iron, and at the same time preserve the natural sensitivity of the fingers.

Therefore, the decision to buy gloves always depends entirely on your personal preferences and skin characteristics. If you are not afraid of the aesthetics of working calluses, it is better to ditch the gloves in favor of chalk for maximum progress in grip strength.
