The heating of an electrical outlet during the operation of household appliances is an alarming signal indicating serious malfunctions in the electrical circuit. Ignoring this symptom is dangerous, as strong thermal impact can melt the plastic housing of the outlet, damage the internal wiring, and provoke the ignition of finishing materials or a short circuit.
One of the most frequent causes of heating is exceeding the permissible power of the connected appliance. Modern outlets are rated for a certain current, usually 16 amperes, which corresponds to approximately 3.5 kilowatts of total load. If you simultaneously plug a powerful heater, a kettle, and a washing machine into a single outlet using a power strip, the contacts begin to overheat due to excessive current density.
The second common cause is the loosening of screw terminals used to secure wires to the outlet contacts. Over time, under the influence of temperature fluctuations, the metal expands and contracts, causing the contact connection to weaken. At the point of poor contact, transition resistance increases, leading to heat generation. A similar problem occurs if the spring clips of the sockets in old outlets have lost their elasticity and do not tightly grip the plug prongs.
To eliminate the heating problem, you need to follow this algorithm. First, completely de-energize the line using the circuit breaker in the electrical panel. Then carefully disassemble the outlet by unscrewing the central screw and removing the front cover. Inspect the condition of the wires and terminals: if there are signs of soot or melting, they must be cleaned or the damaged section of the wire cut off.
If the terminals or the outlet mechanism itself show signs of severe burning, the device must be replaced with a new, high-quality product featuring a ceramic or heat-resistant plastic base. Make sure the screws are tightened as securely as possible and the wire cores have no microcracks. After assembling the outlet, plug in a low-power appliance and monitor the housing temperature for half an hour under load.
