Replacing an old or damaged outlet is a standard home electrical maintenance task that can be done independently with strict adherence to safety rules. Loosen the screw terminals and disconnect the wires from the old device, making sure to photograph the wiring diagram beforehand for reliability. Clean the ends of the wires from oxidation if necessary, and strip five to seven millimeters of insulation if the metal is damaged. If necessary, secure the new wires into the terminals of the new outlet, observing the polarity for the phase, neutral, and ground conductors.

Carefully tuck the wires inside the junction box, align the outlet mechanism with a level, and secure it with expanding clips or screws. Attach the decorative cover to the front of the housing.
