QUESTION: Is it harmful to sleep during the day?

Answer

Daytime sleep in moderation can be a great way to restore energy during the day, but its effect on the body depends on the duration and time of day. A short nap lasting about twenty to thirty minutes is usually beneficial: it helps increase concentration, improve memory, and restore vigor without harming health. This format allows the brain to immerse itself only in the superficial phases of sleep and avoid a state of inertia or grogginess after waking up.

However, a long daytime sleep can seriously disrupt the structure of nighttime rest and cause evening insomnia. If you sleep for more than an hour, you can fall into deep phases of sleep that are difficult to emerge from, leading to a feeling of fatigue and disorientation. Therefore, it is important to observe time limits and plan rest in the first half of the day, preferably no later than fifteen hours, so that excess energy has time to dissipate by nightfall.

Experts do not recommend sleeping during the day for people who suffer from chronic night insomnia, as this reduces the natural sleep pressure and prevents establishing a proper routine. In such cases, it is better to wait until evening so that the body can get a full rest overnight. It is always important to listen to your body, taking into account individual needs and fatigue levels, rather than following rigid rules.
