Is daytime sleep useful?

Answer

Short daytime sleep can be an excellent tool for restoring energy and increasing performance if approached correctly. However, its effect on the body depends on the duration of the rest and individual characteristics of a person.

A short sleep lasting from twenty to thirty minutes helps to clear the head, improve concentration, and increase overall productivity. During this time, the brain manages to rest a little, but does not plunge into deep sleep phases, from which it is difficult to wake up.

If you sleep longer than half an hour, there is a high probability of waking up in a state of so-called sleep inertia. This is an unpleasant feeling of exhaustion, lethargy, and drowsiness, which can last for several hours and reduce productivity instead of increasing it.

From the point of view of the impact on circadian rhythms, daytime sleep usually does not disrupt nighttime rest if it is completed before three o'clock in the afternoon. Late sleep can lead to difficulty falling asleep in the evening, which will disrupt the natural daily routine.

It is important to understand that regular acute sleep deprivation is better compensated by quality nighttime rest rather than daytime breaks. In addition, daytime sleep is not suitable for everyone, and some people feel only worse after it.
