QUESTION: Are sulfates in shampoos harmful?

Answer

Sulfates, such as sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, are surface-active substances that effectively remove impurities, excess sebum, and styling residue. Due to their high cleansing ability, they provide deep scalp cleansing and abundant foam that many consumers love.

However, because of their efficacy, sulfates can strongly degrease the skin, leading to dryness, itching, and irritation, especially for those with sensitive or atopic-prone skin. In response to excessive cleansing, the sebaceous glands may start producing even more sebum, which causes hair to get dirty faster.

Sulfur-free shampoos contain milder cleansing components that are gentle on the hydro-lipid balance of the scalp and the structure of the hair shaft. They lather less and require thorough massaging of the scalp during washing, but they are great for sensitive skin and prolong color fastness after dyeing.

For colored, bleached, or damaged hair, sulfate-free formulas are the preferred choice, as they wash out pigment much more slowly. For most people, the choice between sulfate and mild shampoos depends solely on personal preference, scalp type, and the desired cosmetic effect.
