How to factory reset a Mac?

A complete factory reset of a Mac computer may be required when preparing the device for sale, transferring it to another owner, or fixing serious software glitches. The cleaning method depends on the version of the installed operating system and your computer model.

On modern versions of macOS, the process is streamlined as much as possible and does not require creating bootable flash drives. It is enough to open the Apple menu, go to System Settings, select the General section, and then the Transfer or Reset item.

This menu contains a special Erase All Content and Settings feature, which launches a wizard to remove all user data, accounts, and applications without needing to reinstall the entire operating system from scratch. You will only need to enter your administrator password and confirm your intentions.

For older computers or in situations where the standard menu is unavailable, the classic recovery mode is used.

After completing these procedures, your Mac will be completely clean and ready for initial setup as if it just came out of the store.
