What is a split workout?

Answer

A split workout is a method of dividing the body or muscle groups into different days of the week, which allows you to give maximum attention and intensity to each zone. Instead of working the entire body in a single workout, you break the load down into several specialized sessions. This approach is the standard in modern fitness and bodybuilding.

The most popular classical scheme is the division into pull, push, and legs, known worldwide. On push day, the chest, front delts, and triceps are worked. On pull day, the back muscles, rear delts, and biceps are included in the work. The third day is entirely devoted to leg training, which includes quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and glutes.

An alternative popular option is the upper and lower body split, which is great for intermediate athletes. With this scheme, exercises for the entire upper body involving pushing and pulling are performed on one day, and powerful work for the lower torso and core is done on the second day.

The main advantage of split workouts lies in the ability to load target muscles more frequently and deeply, while giving them enough time for full recovery and supercompensation. This helps avoid general physical fatigue, which is inevitable when trying to put a quality load on the entire body in a single one-hour session.
