Water: how to spot hidden leaks and check the meter?

Timely detection of hidden leaks in the water supply system helps avoid emergencies, expensive repairs, and extra financial expenses based on meter readings. To conduct a home audit and check the correct operation of water meters, it is necessary to use a clear algorithm of actions accessible to every homeowner. Preliminary preparation includes determining the goals of the check, allocating a small budget in case of replacing gaskets or fittings, and setting specific deadlines for diagnostics.

The first step in checking the meter is completely turning off all water withdrawal points in the apartment, including faucets, the shower, the washing machine, and the dishwasher, as well as checking the operation of the toilet flush tank. After this, you need to go to the hot and cold water meters and closely observe the state of their dials or electronic displays. If even the slightest division or control gear continues to rotate, this indicates the presence of a hidden leak in the system or a malfunction of the shut-off valve itself.

For in-depth diagnostics, you can record the current meter readings on paper, then not use water at all for several hours, and then repeat the comparison of the figures. If a difference between the measurements is recorded, it means that water is leaking somewhere imperceptible to the eye, for example, at the pipe connection point inside the box, under the bathtub, or in the toilet mechanism. In this case, it is recommended to alternately shut off the isolation valves for individual devices to localize the problem area and accurately determine the source of the leak.

After identifying the problem zone, you should proceed to eliminate it yourself or with the involvement of a professional plumber, and then repeat the control test with the meters. Regular implementation of such checks once every few months helps to timely notice worn gaskets, pipe corrosion, or equipment malfunctions. Such a preventive approach guarantees peace of mind, the safety of neighbors' property, and absolute accuracy of charges for consumed resources.
