[ITEM 5] QUESTION: Foreign languages: how to improve pronunciation and accent?
Improving pronunciation and getting rid of a strong accent in a foreign language requires not just passive listening to announcers' speech, but active muscular work of the speech apparatus. To sound natural and confident, it is necessary to regularly train the articulation muscles that are unusual for producing the sounds of a new language.
One of the most effective methods is the technique of active reproduction and imitation of native speakers' speech. Choose a short audio phrase or video clip, listen to it sentence by sentence, and try to copy the intonation, pauses, and sounds of the native speaker as accurately as possible. It is helpful to ask yourself questions in the target language and answer them out loud, simulating a real conversation without prior preparation.
To consolidate correct speech patterns, regularity and spaced repetition of complex sounds and phrases are critically important. Short twenty-minute training sessions spaced one, three, and seven days apart give much more pronounced progress than long and tiring cramming once a week. Regularity allows neural connections in the brain and muscle memory to fix the correct movements of the tongue and lips.
Additionally, it is recommended to record your speech on a voice recorder and compare it with the native speaker's standard. This helps to hear from the outside mistakes in stress and intonation that are imperceptible during conversation. Gradually, your pronunciation will become cleaner, and foreign speech will sound natural and harmonious.
