How to properly use two-factor authentication for maximum account security?

Answer

Two-factor authentication has become an information security standard that protects accounts even in the event of a password leak. The essence of the method lies in requesting two different types of proof of your identity: something you know (a password) and something you have (a physical device or key). However, not all types of two-factor authentication are equally reliable and secure for your privacy.

The most vulnerable method is considered to be sending confirmation codes via SMS or voice calls. This method is susceptible to SIM-swapping attacks, when attackers reissue your number with a telecom operator, as well as message interception through vulnerabilities in the SS7 protocol. A more reliable option is mobile applications for generating time-based one-time codes, although they are still vulnerable to phishing sites that can intercept the code in real time.

To ensure the maximum level of protection, it is recommended to use hardware security keys operating on FIDO2 and WebAuthn protocols.

Purchase a physical USB key or a device with NFC support for authorization.
Register the key in all critical services, including mail and cloud storage.
Create a backup copy of the key in case you lose your main device.
Completely disable receiving codes via SMS wherever it is technically possible. This approach makes phishing attacks practically impossible, as the key physically verifies the authenticity of the domain where authorization is taking place.
