Why might the color of urine change after starting vitamin supplements?
Many people get alarmed when they notice that their urine turns a bright yellow or even neon shade after taking vitamins. This at first glance alarming phenomenon is actually a completely natural and safe process that most people experience when taking multivitamins or individual nutrients.
The main reason for the change in urine color is the presence of vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, in the composition. This is a water-soluble vitamin that gives fluids a characteristic fluorescent yellow-green color. The body absorbs exactly as much riboflavin as it currently needs for metabolic processes, and the excess is eliminated naturally through the kidneys.
The intensity of the coloring depends on the dosage of the supplement and the amount of water consumed during the day. If you drink little plain water, your urine will be more concentrated and bright yellow. Increasing your fluid intake will help make the color less saturated, but the fact of coloring itself only indicates that the body has gotten rid of the excess vitamin.
It is worth noting that vitamin B2 is not the only component that affects the color of secretions. Some other water-soluble vitamins and plant extracts in complex supplements can also give urine a specific shade. Nevertheless, if the color change is accompanied by pain, burning, or other alarming symptoms, you should stop taking the supplement and consult a doctor.
