Nutrition and sports: how to avoid post-lunch drowsiness if you have an evening gym workout coming up?

Answer

Many IT professionals face this problem: after a hearty business lunch or a homemade meal, severe drowsiness sets in, but in the evening you need to productively power through a workout. To keep your brain from shutting down during a code review and to have the strength for heavy sets at the gym, you need to revise the composition of your daytime meal. The main cause of lethargy is a sharp insulin spike in response to simple carbs and overly fatty foods that linger in the stomach for a long time.

Instead of the usual pasta with a heavy sauce or fast food, choose complex carbohydrates with a moderate glycemic index and quality protein. A great option would be a serving of brown rice, quinoa, or buckwheat with baked chicken breast or fish, supplemented with fresh vegetables. Such a combination ensures stable blood glucose levels, preventing energy crashes and maintaining high concentration in front of the monitor.

If lunch was a while ago and there are about two hours left before the workout, be sure to have a light snack. A banana and a small handful of nuts or a glass of kefir with a spoon of honey will do. This will provide a quick burst of energy without creating heaviness in the stomach. Eating a heavy meal right before heading to the gym will cause blood to rush to the digestive organs rather than the working muscles, which will reduce workout efficiency and cause discomfort.

Do not forget to drink pure water throughout the working day, as mild dehydration is often disguised as fatigue and drowsiness. Put a bottle on your desk and take a few sips every half hour. On workout days, the level of hydration is critically important, otherwise strength and endurance metrics will drop noticeably, and recovery from exercise will drag on.
