Swimming: how to improve freestyle technique?
Improving freestyle swimming technique requires a systematic approach and attention to detail, as this stroke is the fastest but also the most technically demanding. Start your work by setting a clear goal and maintaining consistency, scheduling two to three practice sessions per week. In the initial stages, focus entirely on mastering basic movements and proper biomechanics, and only after the skill has stabilized should you transition to a gradual increase in physical load.
Pay special attention to your body position in the water and arm movement. Your torso should be extended as much as possible parallel to the water's surface, and your gaze directed strictly down at the bottom of the pool to avoid lifting your head and creating unnecessary drag. The arm movement begins with a smooth entry into the water fingertips first, followed by an effective pull underneath yourself with a bent elbow and a powerful finish near the hip.
To reinforce correct skills, use special drill exercises and equipment. Swimming with a pull buoy between your legs will help you feel the high hip position and upper body work without getting distracted by your legs, while paddles will develop your muscular feel for the water. It is also useful to record your workouts on video from the side to notice and correct technique mistakes in a timely manner.
