Budget and planning·100 questions

QUESTION: What expense categories are best to set up in the budget at the start?

Answer

At the very start of keeping a personal budget, it is very important not to complicate the process and not to create too many small categories, otherwise keeping records will quickly become tedious. It is optimal to limit yourself to six to ten basic areas.

Housing and utilities. This includes all apartment rent expenses, mortgage payments, electricity, water, internet, and home maintenance.
Groceries. Buying food for cooking at home in supermarkets and markets.
Transportation. Public transport expenses, taxis, gasoline, car maintenance, and parking.
Health and beauty. Buying medicine, doctor visits, gym memberships, and personal hygiene products.
Mandatory payments and taxes. Insurance, state fees, and regular subscriptions.
Entertainment and cafes. Going to the movies, restaurants, vacations, and leisure.
Clothing and footwear. Updating the wardrobe for all family members.
Children and education. School expenses, courses, kindergartens, and development.
Loans and debt. All payments on installments and loans.
Miscellaneous. Unforeseen small expenses that are difficult to classify in advance.

There is no need to split each of these categories into smaller subsections at the initial stage. It is much more important to develop the habit of regularly entering data and learning to honestly record all your expenses.
