Cover letter — is it necessary?

Answer

A cover letter when applying for a job remains a controversial tool, the effectiveness of which heavily depends on the specifics of the company, corporate culture, and the market where you are looking for work. In the Russian reality, recruiters in large corporations often do not read long texts, however, a well-crafted letter will never hurt and will set you apart from hundreds of other candidates.

A completely different situation arises in international companies, tech startups, and creative positions, where a motivational letter is a mandatory part of the selection process. For such employers, this is an opportunity to assess your level of written language proficiency, ability to formulate thoughts, and genuine interest in their product and field of activity.

The classic structure of a successful cover letter should be concise and consist of no more than three to four semantic paragraphs.

A brief explanation of why you want to work specifically at this company and whether you share its values
Demonstration of your value through one or two key achievements from past experience relevant to the job tasks
A call to action expressing readiness to discuss details at a personal meeting or interview

The main rule of personalization is not to send a template text to everyone indiscriminately, but to tailor it to each specific vacancy. Categorically avoid simply repeating information from your resume — the cover letter should complement it by revealing your personality, motivation, and understanding of the potential employer's business goals.
